Course Selection Process

Course Selection Overview

Our course selection process for the following year, begins in February of the current school year, when teachers recommend appropriate course levels for students based on their current performance and progress. During this time, school counselors meet with 9th and 10th-grade students in their ILT classes and meet individually with each junior to review graduation requirements and help them map out a plan to meet those requirements throughout their high school career.

In March, counselors return to ILT classes to provide a comprehensive overview of the course selection process. During this time, counselors are also available to meet with students by appointment. Students will learn about available course options, ensuring they are prepared to make informed decisions about their academic program for the upcoming school year.

How Families Can Support

Families can play an important role in this process by reviewing course recommendations with their students, discussing academic goals and interests, and encouraging thoughtful consideration of course choices. We also encourage families to stay informed through counselor communications and reach out with any questions as students finalize their schedules.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can students choose courses different from teacher recommendations?
Teacher recommendations are an important part of the process and are based on current performance and readiness. In some cases, students may request a different level, which will be reviewed through the course override process.

What if my student is unsure about which courses to take?
Teachers, IEP Case Managers, and School Counselors are available to support students in making thoughtful decisions based on their academic goals, interests, and graduation requirements.

Can course selections be changed after they are submitted?
Schedule changes are limited after selections are finalized, as course offerings and staffing are built based on student requests. Families are encouraged to carefully review choices before submission.

How are graduation requirements tracked?
Counselors work with students throughout their high school career to monitor progress toward graduation requirements and ensure students remain on track.

Can students replace their study hall with a course?

During the course selection process (March), only Band and Chorus may be requested in lieu of a study hall. Once the school year has begun, students may request to fill their study hall with an elective, pending availability during their free block. The exception to this is for rising seniors, who are allowed to fill their schedule if requested.
